In a statement issued on Wednesday [12], Chief Epidemiologist of the Ministry of Health Dr. Sudath Samaraweera said that research is being conducted in order to detect whether new variants of the virus have entered the country.
This announcement was made at the press briefing held at the Department of Government Information.
He confirmed that the Indian Variant of sars cov-2 had entered Sri Lanka, through the arrival of an Indian national to the country. The individual has been placed in quarantine, in order to prevent the further spread of the virus strain.
As an additional precaution he stressed the need to run a special Covid-19 test, on individuals entering the country from India and other countries,where individuals may have contracted the new strains of the virus.
