The International Chamber of Commerce, Sri Lanka ( ICCSL) asserts that the Port City project is likely to have a significant impact on the Sri Lankan economy. The ICCSL predicts that it will generate FDIs and create opportunities for trade as well as employment in the future.
The chairman of the ICCSL Dinesh Weerakkody said that the Port City Commission Bill was essential for the governance of the Port City. Important functions such as the setting up of a commission to grant licenses, registrations and other approvals to operate business in such economic zones, will be integral for the operation of the Port City which will function as a “special economic zone”.
However there remains many concerns as to whether the Port City bill is harmful to the autonomy of Sri Lanka.
