Parliament is set to discuss the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill, during sessions set to be convened on May 19 and May 20.
The ruling given by the SC will be announced by Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, on May 18.
However, several petitions have been filed with the Supreme Court (SC), in opposition to the Bill, Many were particularly concerned about the power granted by the Bill. For example, it outlines the setting up of a commission, which has the power to grant licenses,registrations, authorisations, and other approvals to carry on businesses and other activities in the Special Economic Zone (SEZ), within the Port City.
A 5 member commission will be appointed in order to administer the Port City, after approval is granted for the Bill, in Parliament.
