Sri Lanka’s Central Bank has rejected Tim Draper’s proposal to use Bitcoin to fix the economy. Draper, a billionaire venture capitalist, was met with opposition from the Central Bank Governor Nandalal Weerasinghe, who argued that a country without its own currency would lose monetary independence and that adopting Bitcoin during a time of crisis could potentially worsen the situation.
The Governor stated, “We do not accept…we don’t want to make the crisis worse by introducing Bitcoin.” Draper was in Sri Lanka to film an episode of his TV show “Meet the Drapers” and promote the use of Bitcoin in the country.
